Tug of War

The Vikings start well and have the upper hand...

...but the Men of Catterline dig deep and hold their ground.

The Vikings start to tire...

.. and the Men of Catterline seize the advantage.

The Vikings fight to the last, but eventually have to yield.
With so many horny and hairy Vikings wandering around at the Gala, the Gentlemen of the Village felt the need to assert their masculinity in a very overt way, so they challenged the Vikings to a tug of war.
Being canny men, they waited until immediately after the Vikings’ combat display to issue their challenge, so the Vikings were still out of breath from having spent thirty minutes running around in chainmail and shouting at each other.
The two teams quickly formed under the watchful eyes of David Argo, who made sure there were the same number of people on each end of the rope.
Despite their local knowledge, the home team chose to pull up hill. They then threw away a further advantage when the Vikings negotiated a change in the usual rules so that both teams should pull in bare feet. (Apparently bellowing "take your shoes off!" is how Vikings "negotiate"). This was to level the competition as the Vikings, who were as authentically dressed as possible, had no heels on their shoes - heels being a 15th century invention.
At first the Vikings seems to have the upper hand. They showed good form and the advantage of the slope helped them to make steady progress. However, the experienced Gentlemen of Catterline did not panic, and instead dug in as best they could to hold their ground. Soon, the Vikings began to tire, perhaps as a result of their earlier exertions on the battle field, and they began to lose ground. The Gentlemen pushed home their advantage and completed the pull for a (literally) historic victory.
