Yet another addition to the rapidly expanding calendar of cartie events in the North East of Scotland (is it something in the water, perhaps?). This one is a race for three miles, starting near the summit of Cairn William and finishing in Monymusk Village. It is set to take place on the 17th September, one week after the Stonehaven Annual Cartie Race Event (S.C.A.R.E.).

Apparently there is some pedigree behind this event, although the last one was held 26 years ago. Full details at http://monymusk.org/cairtie/index.html.

Entry forms, rules, course map etc for the Monymusk Cairtie Race are now online at http://monymusk.org/cairtie/index.html.

It looks more like an endurance race than a downhill sprint.

Just got this from the organisers of the Monymusk Cairtie Race.
Quote:

Just got back from a Cairtie Race meeting and thought I’d pass on a couple of points which came up. Mike Ward of the Grampian transport Museum, who is also the scrutineer walked the course this morning with Lady Grant and they’ve made a couple of rule changes. This will be posted on the website and brought to the attention of entrants but here they are anyway:

If the carts fail the brake test they will start the race at the bottom of the steep section. So there will be an A race and a B race. Younger racers could start here too if they wish. Also crucially for your cart design, Mike felt that 3 people riding on the cart was just too dangerous and so the second and third members of the team will join the driver at the bottom of the steep section. Only the driver will come down the hill. Yes it would have been good to have straightened this out a long time ago but better late than never I guess.

Having been up to Monymusk the other weekend to try out their course, I have to say I think this is a really good idea. The first section is steep, long and quite twisty in places, and building a cartie that would handle it with three people on board would be difficult enough without then having to shove it for another two miles to the finish line. With the new changes, several of the more robust Catterline carties could take place with little or no modification.

Excellent cartie race! Great fun. "Once a fortnight" won again, and Slammer got "Best Design". More details here.

Pictures here and here. See also monymusk.org for more info.
